A-C Brake was founded in 1924 and functioned primarily as a brake specialist. The derivation of the name is unclear; however, there are two theories. The original owners were Bill Attix and Charles Clephas; thus the A-C from the first letter of each of their last two names. Or, the second theory is that the name came from the ol A-C (anti-clatter) brake that was on the Model T Ford.
Founders Charles Clephas and Bill Attix
Records indicate that Clephas bought out Attix in August 1924. When Clephas died in 1953, his brother-in-law E C Thirlwell assumed the management of the company until his death in 2003.  Thirlwell’s children, ran the company until May 2008 at which time the assets were acquired by Republic Diesel, Inc..
